About FuckUp Nights
FuckUp Nights is a global movement that started in Mexico in 2012 and has spread to +100 cities in more than 35 countries around the world. The concept of FuckUp Nights is simple: breaking away from the stigmas surrounding (business) ‘failure’. The lessons we can learn from failure are often more valuable and interesting than stories about success. The majority of startups and professionals don’t create ‘the project of year’ on their first attempt, yet we rarely hear about their failures in books, magazines or at events. FuckUp Nights wants to change that by organizing events where people are able to come together, network, share, learn and celebrate stories about business failure. Want to know more details? Check out our online facebook community!
Why join FuckUp Nights Tokyo?
We would like to invite all (aspiring) entrepreneurs, freelancers and professionals who want to hear, share, discuss and celebrate stories about business failure. We offer you an opportunity to freely discuss the concept of failure, and learn from the experiences of others; all in a cozy and casual setting. This will be a great opportunity for you to meet new like-minded people and have a chance to share issues that you do usually not tend to discuss at other events.
The Fuck Up Nights Event Format
The format of every FuckUp Nights is simple: 3 or 4 people take the stage to share their FuckUp stories, followed by a Q&A, and ending with time to network. The presenters tell their story through 10 images, each projected for exactly 40 seconds. The stories are always structured in the following way:
1) What was your project?
2) What went wrong?
3) What did you learn?
4) What would you do differently?
Speaker Profiles
1. Patrick Sneep
Patrick is a Startup Business Developer for Swisscom, the largest Telecom company in Switzerland. He works passionately to create room for innovation in a large organization and to build new products in collaboration with startup companies. Patrick is currently on an assignment for startup scouting in Japan, building a network of innovators and investors to connect with the Swiss startup ecosystem.
In 2013, after returning from a placement in the Silicon Valley, he co-founded an Open Innovation initiative inside Swisscom called "The Pirates Hub". The driving idea was to develop and test new digital products and business models by collaborating with talented entrepreneurs outside of the corporate structures of Swisscom.
Starting out with a team of two people and the slightly ridiculous goal to transform how an organization with 20,000 employees does innovation, many things were about to go wrong. From failed product launches to office politics and embarrassing management board presentations - Patrick will tell the story of his many mistakes and the lessons he learned.
2. Shingo Potier de la Morandière
Shingo is an inquisitive entrepreneur with a belief that entrepreneurship in everyone holds the key to changing the world for better. Seeing beyond the recognisable patterns allows him to understand the interdependencies of the stakeholders, and build systems to allow sustained positive impact to societies. After creating more than 7 businesses and worked in 4 global corporations, he co-founded Impact HUB Tokyo to provide much needed resources for the Japanese entrepreneurs. He is usually accountable for finance, technology and strategy.
When Shingo was still in progress of transforming himself from a banker to a non-banker, he became the CFO of a web service startup. The company had 2 founders and Shingo decided to put some sweat equity into this startup for 7% equity. After the early traction, he managed to find an investor who was willing to invest $3,000,000. Long story short, Shingo had to blow the whistle and tell the investors not to invest in his company. A disappointing end to the gamble he took and since then, he began asking questions about the venture capital investment model.
3. Yasutaka Kageyama
Yasutaka is the CEO of BREW, and does design work for Japanese beverage companies and startups. Before he started BREW, he worked for: an art studio, editorial design office, web design production company, as well as a freelancer. He is currently developing a mobile phone app that helps you to find the right kind of Japanese sake you are looking for.
Yasutaka loves alcohol, so the story he will share with us will also feature the involvement of (too much) alcohol. His story will center around how his failures due to alcohol actually let him start his own company that deals with Alcohol. Please check out his company BREW: http://brew-inc.jp/
