Description

Welcome To FuckUp Nights Tokyo! FuckUp Nights is a global movement that started in Mexico in 2012 and has spread to +90 cities in more than 30 countries around the world. Impact HUB Tokyo is proud to host the first of this event series in Tokyo and we invite you to join us for Volume I on Thursday April 30th!

The concept of FuckUp Nights is simple: breaking away from the stigmas surrounding (business) ‘failure’. The lessons we can learn from failure are often more valuable and interesting than stories about success. The majority of startups and professionals don’t create ‘the project of year’ on their first attempt, yet we rarely hear about their failures in books, magazines or at events. FuckUp Nights wants to change that by organizing events where people are able to come together, network, share, learn and celebrate stories about business failure.

Impact HUB Tokyo as FuckUp Nights Venue

Impact HUB Tokyo is proud to be the official venue for FuckUp Nights Tokyo! Impact HUB Tokyo is part innovation lab, business incubator and coworking space where a community of (social) entrepreneurs gathers, connects and exchanges knowledge and ideas. As Impact HUB Tokyo, we share the vision with the global FuckUp Nights movement that the societal taboo surrounding failure needs to be broken. We are therefore very excited to host this our first FuckUp Nights event as a bimonthly series!

Why join FuckUp Nights Tokyo?

We would like to invite all (aspiring) entrepreneurs, freelancers and professionals who want to hear, share, discuss and celebrate stories about business failure. We want to offer you an opportunity to freely discuss the concept of failure, and learn from others' experiences; all in a casual setting with with beer and food. This will be a great opportunity for you to meet new like-minded people and discuss the things you do usually not tend to share at other events.

The Fuck Up Nights Event Format

The format of every FuckUp Nights is simple: 3 to 4 people take the stage to share their story, followed by a Q&A, and ending with time to network. The presenters tell their story in 10 images, each projected for exactly 40 seconds. The stories are always structured in the following way:

1) What was your project?
2) What went wrong?
3) What did you learn?
4) What would you do differently?

Speaker Profiles

1. Mateus Bagatini

Mateus is a content creator and develops strategies and stories for startups, as well as big brands. He started his work in Brazil as a graphic designer and then moved to London to work as a trend researcher. Currently he is based here in Tokyo, where he works at BREW Inc. as a strategic designer.

Mateus’ study background is in the field of advertising, but he never pursued a career in this particular field. Instead, he did his first internship as a designer, but he did not solely stay on that path either. He has worked as a: brand strategist, market researcher, mentor to startups and as an entrepreneur. These constant career changes were partially due to the lack of success as a professional, but Mateus feels that he has actually been able to learn a lot from his failures. He will share these experiences with us during the 1st Volume of FuckUp Nights Tokyo.

2. Marc-Alexandre Cartiant

Marc has been working in Japan for 7 years. He initially came to Japan as an expat, but eventually co-founded Odigo travel. Marc currently splits his life between Shiga-Ken (Otsu) and Tokyo, so the Shinkansen functions as a great mobile office for him.

Marc has tried to make a difference in the field of language learning. He thoroughly prototyped and tested a new type of reading paradigm. He managed to get a Japanese patent for his product and contacted as many people as possible; companies, teachers, students, investors etc. However, all of these efforts didn’t really pay off, and Marc was forced to drop this project entirely as he came close to being broke. A proper FuckUp, but a valuable lesson for the future!

3. Andre Casaclang

Andre is the founder of Climbing Bean, a Tokyo and Sydney based consumer focused startup currently building three applications in the dating, fashion and loyalty programme space. He has worked in the digital space for over 15 years as a user-experience designer and product manager, working with companies like Yahoo and News Corp. He also runs Tokyo Pioneers, a startup event helping connect the entrepreneurs in the Japanese community.

As an entrepreneur, Andre excels in the field of failure, having fucked up and bombed big time on multiple occasions. His greatest success as a failure was his misguided attempt to bring the joys of Onigiri to Australia. A web guy that can't cook bringing Onigiri to a country still getting used to sushi? What could go wrong there? Well, that is what he is going to tell us during FuckUp Nights Tokyo, as well as the lessons he learned from it.

4. Sebastian de Goeij

Sebastian has a background in Asian Studies and Political Science and has been back and forth between Holland and Japan since he was a university student. Currently he is working for Impact HUB Tokyo as Alliance Manager and Community Host, and is also one of the organizers of FuckUp Nights Tokyo.

When Sebastian started working for Impact HUB Tokyo he ambitiously took on a marketing project. This project should have increased the outside exposure of Impact HUB Tokyo as well the number of members within its entrepreneurial community. Well, it went a little differently than he expected. There was a lot of talking about what do you (what do you expect from someone who comes from the field of politics) without a lot of doing. Eventually, a promotional brochure was created, but it’s effectiveness has been close to 0%. To sum up: a lot of time wasted, some money wasted, but a valuable lesson learned as well as a good story for FuckUp Nights Tokyo Vol. I!
